“MEIN GUSTAV” is the result of over fifty years of research into WWI aviation. There is flying aplenty, but pilots only flew so much. Their associates, friends, and lovers enter the tale. Two stories are presented; one British, one German. Corporal Noble-Brown opens the book, a new fighter pilot who encounters a leading German flyer over France. Then is introduced Vizefeldwebel Gustav Model, an infantryman who survived a gas attack, then transferred into the German air service. Their stories are followed within. The women are strong in an era where they were considered as second class citizens. They have dreams and are willing to fight to achieve them. Though begun as a book about flying, “Mein Gustav” is a character driven story.
